Urushi-Nuri

Japanese lacquer, called Urushi-Nuri or Shikki, is made out of natural materials gathered from the sap of a tree by sharpening the barks. It has been used in Japan for furniture and tableware for a long time not only for its beauty of deep bright red color but also for its durability to endure acid or alkali. Hokuriku district is famous for its production of lacquer ware, especially WAJIMA lacquering in Ishikawa prefecture has become widely know worldwide.
Generally, the production process in large is divided into three parts; the processing of the wood materials, the undercoating, and the final coating, however the several parts takes several processes and to complete one product and there are actually 30-40 steps.
